About Camp Agape Northwest
History
Since 1997, Camp Agape Northwest has been serving children with cancer and their families. Camp Agape Northwest was inspired by Father John Bakus and Bishop Anthony of the San Francisco Metropolis, after they witnessed the need for children with cancer and their families to experience a carefree and memory making week where the whole family would be nurtured in a loving camp environment.
This idea was implemented by the Ladies Philoptochos Society, a Greek Orthodox women’s philanthropic group whose mission is to serve people in need with love and support. The Ladies of the Philoptochos Society worked together to fundraise for “Kids N’ Cancer,” and developed the foundation for the first Camp Agape in Dunlap, California in 1989. The name Agape was chosen because it means unconditional love.
Camp Agape Northwest is now an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization. From the beginning, Camp Agape Northwest has collaborated to create a unique camp filled with love and support for children with cancer and their families.
Mission
We believe that when a child is diagnosed with cancer, the whole family is in need of care and healing. At Camp Agape Northwest, we create a place for kids with cancer to feel joy, siblings a chance to feel special, and parents a time to be together. We serve all families with a child that has been diagnosed with cancer and receives treatment in Washington State. Camp Agape Northwest is cost-free to our families. Our goal is to create a place for families to come together to start the healing process while creating a broader community of support.
Inclusivity
As an organization, we are committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all, and will ensure that everyone (all participants and volunteers) have equitable access to Agape.
